Could Your Recruitment Agency Pass a Cyber Essentials Assessment?

Simrat 6 November 2026

Recruitment is built on trust.

Every day, recruitment agencies handle valuable information, from CVs and contact details to employment histories, salary expectations and identification documents. Clients also trust recruiters with vacancy information, internal communications and commercially sensitive data.

But while your team might be great at finding the right people, how confident are you that the technology behind your recruitment business is properly protected?

That’s where Cyber Essentials comes in.

What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed cyber security scheme designed to help organisations protect themselves against some of the most common cyber threats.

It focuses on five key technical areas:

  • Firewalls to help protect your internet connection
  • Secure configuration of devices, software and systems
  • User access control so people only have the access they need
  • Malware protection to reduce the risk of malicious software
  • Security updates to address known vulnerabilities

These controls might sound technical, but they relate directly to how recruitment businesses operate every day.

Why should recruitment agencies care?

Think about how much information moves through your agency.

A candidate submits their CV. Their information enters your recruitment systems. Your consultants communicate with them through email and potentially Microsoft Teams. Information may then be shared with a prospective employer.

Meanwhile, recruiters could be accessing systems from the office, from home or while travelling between client meetings.

Every stage creates another opportunity for information to be exposed if devices, accounts and systems aren’t properly secured.

Cyber Essentials provides recruitment agencies with a recognised framework for putting fundamental cyber security controls in place.

Could your agency pass the assessment?

Ask yourself these five questions.

1. Are your devices securely configured?

Recruiters rely heavily on laptops, smartphones and cloud applications.

Devices should be set up securely, unnecessary software and services should be removed or disabled, and default settings shouldn’t simply be left unchanged.

2. Are you keeping software up to date?

Recruitment teams use everything from Microsoft 365 and browsers to CRM and recruitment platforms.

Software vulnerabilities can provide attackers with opportunities to compromise systems, which is why security updates need to be managed properly.

3. Does everyone have the right level of access?

Not every employee needs access to everything.

Access should reflect someone’s role within the business, and administrator privileges should be carefully controlled.

If somebody leaves the organisation, their access should also be removed promptly.

4. Are you protecting accounts from unauthorised access?

A stolen password could potentially give an attacker access to email accounts or business systems.

Strong authentication practices, including multi-factor authentication where required, can make it significantly harder for an attacker to gain access using stolen credentials.

5. Are you protected against malware?

Malware can enter a business through malicious downloads, compromised websites and phishing attacks.

Recruitment teams can receive large volumes of emails, attachments and links every day, making appropriate malware protection an important part of the agency’s wider cyber security approach.

Cyber Essentials isn’t just about passing an assessment

Achieving Cyber Essentials shouldn’t simply be treated as another certificate for the website.

For a recruitment agency, it provides an opportunity to demonstrate to candidates, clients and partners that you’re taking cyber security seriously.

That matters when people are trusting your business with their information.

It can also encourage your agency to review its existing technology and identify areas where security practices need to improve.

So, would your recruitment agency pass?

You might already have several of the right controls in place.

But the important question is whether you’re confident that your current setup meets the requirements of Cyber Essentials.
