Zero Trust for Network Access (ZTNA)

Never trust, always verify

ZTNA

What is Zero Trust for Network Access?

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are operating in a completely different world than they were just a few years ago. Work is no longer tied to the office, employees are accessing business applications from home, on the move, and across multiple devices.

The problem? Traditional security wasn’t built for this.

Traditional security models were designed around a perimeter, the idea that everything inside your network could be trusted, and everything outside couldn’t. But that perimeter no longer exists. Your people are working from home, coffee shops, and client sites. Your applications live in the cloud. Your data moves constantly. Firewalls and VPNs weren’t designed for this reality, and attackers know it.

Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) operates on a fundamentally different principle: never trust, always verify. Rather than granting broad access to anyone who gets past the front door, ZTNA continuously validates every user, every device, and every connection, before granting access only to the specific applications and data that person actually needs. Nothing more.

For SMEs, this matters more than ever. Cyber criminals increasingly target smaller businesses precisely because they assume security will be weaker. A single compromised credential, an unmanaged device, or an over-permissioned account can give an attacker free rein across your entire network. ZTNA eliminates that risk by containing access at every level, so even if something does go wrong, the damage is contained.

When combined with SASE (Secure Access Service Edge), this approach becomes even more powerful. SASE brings together network security and wide-area networking into a single cloud-delivered framework, meaning your security travels with your users wherever they work, not just when they’re sitting in the office. For growing businesses with hybrid teams and cloud-first infrastructure, it’s the architecture that makes modern, secure working genuinely achievable.

The good news? You don’t need an enterprise budget or an in-house security team to implement it. At Urban Network, we make Zero Trust and SASE accessible for SMEs, handling the complexity so you can focus on running your business.

Most SMEs still rely on legacy approaches that assume anything inside the network can be trusted. But in today’s hybrid environment, there is no clear perimeter. One compromised login, one unmanaged device, or one successful phishing attack can give attackers far broader access than it should.

That’s why Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) is quickly becoming the obvious choice.

Instead of granting broad network access, ZTNA connects users only to the specific applications they need, nothing more. Every access request is continuously verified based on identity, device, and context, no matter where the user is working from.

For SMEs, the results are clear:

Tighter control – users only access what they need, reducing risk

Stronger protection – applications are hidden, not exposed to the internet

Secure remote working – consistent security, wherever your team is

Continuous verification – access adapts in real time if risk changes

Better user experience – no clunky VPNs slowing people down
