The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is increasing its focus on cyber resilience across its supply chain, with thousands of organisations expected to meet new cybersecurity requirements in the coming years.
According to recent guidance, there are currently around 9,000 suppliers working directly with the MOD, with an estimated 20,000 additional organisations forming part of the wider defence supply chain. As cyber threats continue to grow, organisations that want to work with the MOD will need to demonstrate that they meet the required cybersecurity standards.
The Push Towards Cyber Resilience
The MOD’s Defence Cyber Certification (DCC) programme is designed to strengthen cyber resilience throughout the defence supply chain. Its aim is to ensure suppliers have appropriate security controls in place to protect sensitive information and reduce cyber risk.
While Level 0 certification is considered the entry point and is relatively straightforward to achieve, organisations must also have Cyber Essentials certification in place. Despite this lower barrier to entry, adoption remains low, with only around 200 organisations currently reported to have achieved Level 0 status.
Why Businesses Should Act Early
Although Level 0 may be achievable for many organisations, preparing evidence, reviewing processes, and implementing required controls still takes time. As certification requirements continue to roll out across the defence sector, demand for assessments and support is expected to increase significantly.
The challenge becomes even greater at higher certification levels. One recent large organisation reportedly spent several hundred hours preparing for a Level 3 submission, demonstrating the level of effort required as certification requirements become more advanced.
Businesses that delay their preparations may find themselves under pressure as deadlines approach and competition for certification resources grows.
